Nurturing Hearts Caregiver Training

June 11th through 14th, Kingdom Families partnered with Initiative for Children at Risk Africa to put on the Nurturing Hearts Caregiver Training in Moshi, Tanzania. We were thankful to host Patrice Penney, MSW as she taught on trauma-informed care for children that have endured traumatic experiences such as family separation, death in their community and poverty.

We invited and facilitated sixty people from various organizations working in family based care, community development, residential care and local pastors. Many participants were our neighbors here in Kilimanjaro, but also had caregivers from Arusha, Tanga, Morogoro, Chalinze and even Kenya! God is healing hearts of traumatized children and our thanks to our supporters and partnering organizations that help made this event take place. The students learned practices to encourage attachment and emotional processing and equally as important, they learned why the children need such special attention. There were lectures, small group discussions and exercises as well as games to promote connection with children.

An additional thanks to our former intern, Jackie Jones, who focused on mental health initiatives during her internship and got us connected to ICARA.

I am a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, living and working in Moshi, Tanzania. My wife is named Melissa and we have three children: Moses, Promise and Shepherd. We are directors over an orphan care ministry called Kingdom Families; advocating for the needs of orphans and vulnerable children and assisting families to welcome them into their homes as sons and daughters.
